. . . excellent tutoring, brilliant playing opportunities and interesting parts. A very memorable experience.
What it is like to be a flute/piccolo player?
. . . challenging, but you have great fun in a friendly environment!
What it is like to be a composer?
To have my composition played by the EYSM orchestra, is the greatest feeling I could ever imagine.
European Youth Summer Music (EYSM) is a week long course for young musicians and singers at the beautiful Haileybury College in Hertfordshire. It includes Symphony Orchestras, Wind Orchestra and Chorale. Improvisation, concerto opportunities, music theatre, gospel choir, samba percussion and in-course concerts throughout the week. Andrew Sherwood – Conductor and violinist who has performed worldwide. Musical Director of the Brighton Youth Orchestra Trust and Musicians of All Saints. Director of University of Brighton Choirs, Conductors of Somerset County Youth Orchestra, Professor at Trinity College, London.
Wind Orchestra
John Greaves – A sought-after orchestral leader and trainer, after working in the USA, he took his Wind Orchestra to a Gold Award five years in succession at the National Concert Band Festival and to Outstanding Awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth.
Vocal & Choral
Thomas Coltman - A bass-baritone with great experience as a repetiteur, including masterclass work for Cardiff Singer of the Year, he has worked with the BBC National Chorus of Wales and a series of Chamber Choirs and is an MD of Opera/Theatre.
Music Co-ordinator and Director of Junior EYSM
Steve Dummer plays in the UK and abroad and regularly broadasts. Founder and director of Talkestra, a member/composer for Itchy Feet, a regular member of Juan Martin’s Flamenco Band and the Tacet Ensemble, he is also Director of the Wind Band course at Dartington.
String Tutors
VIOLIN
John Crawford A former member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. John is a Professor at Trinity College and teaches at the RCM Junior Department. He tours Finland each year to give master classes. John gives lessons in the Alexander Technique at EYSM.
VIOLIN
Charlotte Higgs has played in shows in the West End and the National Theatre, as well English Touring Opera. She regularly coaches youth ensembles and is in demand for her improvisation skills. She is resident violinist with the storytelling company ‘Everyday Magic’ and a teacher of the Alexander Technique.
VIOLA
Michael Schofield is a former member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra whose Guest Principal work includes soloist of the Philharmonia, Birmingham Opera Company, the English National Ballet and more. A founder member of the Bridge quartet who records regularly and has broadcasted on Radio 3 and in Europe, he is a coach at Dartington.
CELLO
Jane Hyland was Principal ‘Cellist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Solo-Cellist with the Orchestra of the Staatstheater, Kassel, Germany and has played with all the London orchestras. She now concentrates on teaching, recitals and chamber music and is also a keen sculptress.
DOUBLE BASS
David Heyes has given recitals and masterclasses in 12 countries and has been a juror at many competitions and was Chairman for the 2008 Brno International Double Bass Competition. His publishing company (Recital Music) has commissioned over 500 works and has the largest catalogue of double bass music in the world.
Woodwind Tutors
FLUTE
Susan Torke became a Leverhulme scholar at the RAM and went on to play with the Emerson String Quartet and, for 10 years with the Regent Wind Quintet. She has performed with orchestras and opera companies in Europe and the USA and taught for some years at the Junior Academy.
OBOE
Andrew Pettitt freelances with the Halle Orchestra, Opera North, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and the Ulster Orchestra. He also enjoys working in education with organisations such as Live Music Now, London Sinfonietta and Spitalfields Festival.
BASSOON
Pete Harrison has played with top orchestras worldwide as well as working extensively in London’s West End, including management of West End and touring shows. He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Dept and Wells Cathedral School and tutors with the National Youth Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.
CLARINET
Keith Allen has conducted at many major concert halls and been responsible for premiere performances. He is the Musical Director of Birmingham Symphonic Winds, Director of National Concert Band Festival, Artistic Director of London International Wind Band Festival.
SAXOPHONE
Andrew Tweed The mainstay of ‘Saxtet’ for many years, Andy works with the CBSO, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Piccadilly Dance Orchestra and Pasedena Roof Orchestra as well as performing regularly with Britain’s premier accordionist, Karen Street. He produces CDs for Big Shed Music.
Brass Tutors
TRUMPET
Denis Curlett has been a member of the Bournemouth Symphony, London Philharmonic, the Hallé, BBC Welsh Symphony, LSO, RPO, BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras. Also a member of London Brass and English Brass. He is currently a tutor with the National Childrens’ Orchestra, and mainly focuses on teaching and conducting.

TROMBONE
David Whitson has freelanced with most of the major orchestras in Britain. Solo work includes concerto broadcasts for TV in the UK, Europe and USA. Co-Principal at ENO, he teaches at the University of Surrey and Junior RAM. He travels worldwide with the English Brass Ensemble giving concerts and master classes.
TUBA/EUPHONIUM
David Powell is a classically-trained musician, who has worked with major orchestras, but is best known as a founder-member of Loose Tubes and has played with Mike Westbrook, John Dankworth and Billy Cobham. More recently, David has been touring and recording with Peter Gabriel and doing summer seasons at Shakespeare’s Globe.
Percussion Tutors
Simon Limbrick – Virtuoso percussionist Simon has worked at venues from Wigmore and Festival Hall to multi-cultural festivals at Tower Hamlets. Using mixed-media he has created performances for the stage and for TV. He regularly works with awide range of music across cultures.
Matthew Green freelances across the UK and regularly with the RSC. In demand as a samba band trainer and workshop leader, he has worked with Ravi Shankar and currently plays with SHAAM. He has worked in the West End on Jesus Christ Superstar, ABBA The Show and Thriller Live.
Composer in Residence
Virtuoso percussionist, Simon Limbrick, (see above)
is also our Composer in Residence.
Simon is supported by Pierre Vigué who came to EYSM six years in a row, from 2006 to 2011, playing the violin and studying composition with Simon each time. The piece for orchestra he wrote in his first year, with modifications, is due for publication soon! He is a graduate of the Conservatoire de Toulouse (France).
Accompanist/Voice Coach
Jennifer Redmond works as a freelance piano teacher and accompanist, and plays in various classical, jazz and baroque ensembles. She is an experienced accompanist and has a particular interest in vocal music and musical theatre. Jennifer has previously worked with young musicians at Wells Cathedral School and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Department. She currently works as an accompanist for the National Youth Choir of Scotland.
