European Youth Summer Music (EYSM) is the Federation of Festivals summer course for young musicians and singers.
The week-long residential course at the beautiful Haileybury College in Hertfordshire includes Symphony Orchestras, Wind Orchestra and Chorale. Our Conductors are Andrew Sherwood, John Greaves and Graham Trew.
The course also includes improvisation, chamber music & ensembles, composition places for 6 students, concerto opportunities, music theatre including choreography, gospel choir, samba percussion, in-course concerts throughout the week and open rehearsals for parents & special guests.
- Registration is 11am-1pm on Saturday 31 July
- The course ends on the evening of Saturday 7 August following the concerts at approx 9pm
- Students may pay for extra nights to stay on Friday 30th July or Saturday night 7 August
- SPORT IN THE AFTERNOON: tennis, football, swimming, cricket, silly games etc
- EVENING EVENTS: students' revue, staff concert, chamber music concert, discos, barbecue

Instrumental Tutors
VIOLIN: John Crawford - A former member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. John is a Professor at Trinity College and also teaches at the RCM Junior Department. He tours Finland each year to give a series of master classes. John gives lessons in the Alexander Technique each morning and gives advice on all aspects of the technique.
VIOLIN: Charlotte Newman - Since graduating from Trinity College of Music in 2004, Charlie has played in shows in the West End and the National Theatre, as well as touring with English Touring Opera. She regularly coaches youth ensembles in the London boroughs of Haringey and Tower Hamlets and is in demand for her improvisation skills, being the resident violinist with the storytelling company 'Everyday Magic'. Charlie has recently qualified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique.
VIOLA: SAMUEL BURSTIN Samuel studied the viola with Richard Crabtree at Trinity College of Music, graduating with a First Class Honours degree and a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction. He had a year with Southbank Sinfonia, before a successful trial led to him joining the Philharmonia Orchestra. He was recently offered the position of Joint Principal Viola with Opera North and is currently on trial with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for their principal viola positions.
CELLO: Jane Hyland - Jane was Principal 'Cellist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and her career continued with an appointment as Solo-Cellist with the Orchestra of the Staatstheater, Kassel, Germany. She has played with all the London and was a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She now concentrates on teaching and playing recitals and chamber music and is also a keen sculptress.
DOUBLE BASS: Richard Waldock - Richard has worked with many orchestras in the UK including the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Manchester Camerata and has worked abroad with the Swiss Philharmonic. He has played chamber music with the Soloists of the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra and, for variety, with rock and ska bands too. Presently working regularly with Oldham and UMIST Symphony Orchestras, he is based in Manchester.
HARP: Rowena Bass - Rowena reached the finals of the BBC Young musician of the Year while she was Principal Harp with NYO. She is presently a member of English Serenata playing at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and gives many solo recitals. With the pianist Oliver Davies she has made a special study of 19th century piano and harp duets. She teaches students aged 7 to 70 and regularly holds workshops and master classes.
FLUTE: Susan Torke - Susan became a Leverhulme scholar at the RAM and went on to play with the Emerson String Quartet and, for 10 years with the Regent Wind Quintet. She has performed with orchestras in Europe and the USA, worked with both opera companies and West End shows and taught for some years at the Junior Academy. She is now living in the UK but frequently revisits and works in her native USA.
OBOE: Andrew Pettitt - Andrew graduated from the RNCM in 2000 and then completed two years of study with Omar Zoboli in Basel, Switzerland. He has since been living in Manchester and freelancing with the Halle Orchestra, Opera North, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and the Ulster Orchestra. As well as performing he also enjoys working in education with organisations such as Live Music Now, London Sinfonietta and Spitalfields Festival.
BASSOON: Tom Oxley - As a chamber musician, Tom has played with the Nash Ensemble and is a founder member of the Zephyr Ensemble of London, who are often heard on BBC Radio 3. Tom plays with many orchestras including the Eruopean Union Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Orchestra of Seville and English National Opera. He is a founder member of the Euopean Union Wind Ensemble.
CLARINET: Keith Allen - Working with orchestras, including City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Shakespeare Company plus choirs and youth ensembles, Keith has conducted at many of the major concert halls in around the world, and been responsible for many premiere performances by British, American and European composers. Musical Director of Birmingham Symphonic Winds, Director of National Concert Band Festival, Artistic Director of London International Wind Band Festival.
SAXOPHONE: Andrew Tweed - The mainstay of 'Saxtet' for many years, Andy works with the CBSO, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Piccadilly Dance Orchestra and Pasedena Roof Orchestra as well as performing regularly with Britain's premier accordionist, Karen Street. In 2005 he released his debut solo CD with pianist Jonathan Taylor and he produces CDs for Big Shed Music. He was Artistic Director of the 2005 British Saxophone Congress.
TRUMPET: Joe Atkins - Once a member of the famous Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, Joe is currently a member of the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble and English Brass Ensemble. As well as holding principal trumpet seats with the Oxford Philomusica and English Sinfonia he also devotes much of his time to teaching and ensemble training.
HORN: Dominic Nunns - Dominic works as a composer, conductor and horn-player with the RSC, Birth of the Cool Nonet and the Brighton Beach Boys: he arranges and plays for the award-winning STOMP Lost and Found Orchestra, touring world-wide. His realisation of Mozart's Horn Concerto is published by Barenreiter. He writes music for film and TV, and appears on screen in The Upside of Anger alongside Kevin Costner.
TROMBONE: David Whitson - Since 1988 David has freelanced with most of the major orchestras in Britain and with chamber orchestras performing contemporary programmes and for fillms, ballet and opera. Solo work includes concerto broadcasts for TV in the UK, Europe and USA. He is Co-Principal at ENO and teaches at the University of Surrey and Junior RAM.He is a member of the English Brass Ensemble and travels with them worldwide giving concerts and master classes.
TUBA/EUPHONIUM: Tim Davy - Tim studied at Trinity College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In the UK Tim has worked with the RPO and other professional orchestras. In Europe, Tim recently toured with the Philharmonia of the Nations, and previously toured Italy and Berlin with the Young Janacek Philharmonic. He has performed with many of London’s amateur orchestras, and is a keen chamber musician, playing in the NAXOS recorded Marlowe Brass Ensemble, as well as a Tuba Quartet.
PERCUSSION: Simon Limbrick - Virtuoso percussionist, Simon has worked at venues from Wigmore and Festival Hall to multi-cultural festivals at Tower Hamlets. Using mixed-media he has created performances for the stage and for TV. He has regularly worked with traditional and contemporary musicians including a wide range of music from other cultures. He has worked on projects and performances in Europe and the US and brings a depth of knowledge of traditions and cultures to his work at EYSM with Matt Green.
PERCUSSION: Matthew Green - Matthew freelances with orchestras/ensembles across the UK and regularly with the RSC. In demand as a samba band trainer and workshop leader, he has a wide spectrum of styles, having worked with Ravi Shankar and currently playing with the UK's leading Nasheed group, SHAAM. He has worked on West End productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar, ABBA The Show and Thriller Live.
MUSIC CO-ORDINATOR: Steve Dummer leads an extremely broad and varied life as a musician conducting and playing throughout Britain and abroad in concert venues and for television and radio. He is founder and director of Talkestra, a member of and composer for the zany jazz band Itchy Feet. He is Director of the Wind Band course at Dartington Summer School; a member of the Tacet Ensemble and a regular member of Juan Martin's Flamenco Band.
MUSICAL THEATRE: Dan Swana - Dan is a freelance musician who teaches in London and Manchester and performs as a singer, pianist and double bass player in both jazz and classical idioms. Previously a Musical Director of the National Youth Music Theatre, he is a founder-member and MD of the award-winning 'The Company' Music Theatre, based at the Lowry Theatre. As a freelance pianist and bass player, he can be heard on Just Jack's top ten album 'Overtones' and has played keyboards for Swing Out Sister on tours in Europe, America and Japan: he is presently playing double bass whilst touring with the band.
ACCOMPANIST: Thomas Coltman is our main accompanist as a singer who will be working with Grange Park Opera in 2010. A true bass, he also has great experience as a repetiteur, including masterclass work for Cardiff Singer of the Year. He was most recently heard at the Wigmore Hall and, as a Choral Singer and Director, has worked with the BBC National Chorus of Wales and a series of Chamber Choirs. He is also a Musical Director of Opera/Theatre.
