Holmfirth Musical Festival has been running for over 70 years and was originally the brainchild of committee members of Holmfirth Feast Sing, who, at the end of the Second World War, decided to establish a competitive musical festival in Holmfirth. The festival was run for many years by a committee formed from the Holmfirth Sing committee. It has always been held in Holmfirth Civic Hall during October, featuring vocal and piano classes for children and adults. Instrumental classes were introduced in the 1990s, We also now have the prestigious Rotary Millennium Trophy class, attracting young people who intend to follow a career in music.
We are a registered charity and have a board of trustees and a working committee. Our charitable objective is “to advance the education and participation of the public in the art of music performance through the organisation of a competitive musical festival and fundraising activities to enable this to become possible.” Music making in Holmfirth has always been part of our cultural heritage.
A new committee has just been appointed who seek to further develop the art of music performance and music making across a wide spectrum of musical interest, participation and performance. We aim ultimately to enable these things to be accessible for all in our community and beyond as we recognise the value of music for mental, physical, cognitive health and social connection, cultural identity and social change. Its possibilities are endless and significant for life.
