The competitive dance world is set to welcome an exciting new event this February 2025 as the Dover Stage Festival makes its debut. Organized by Samantha Hooper, a dedicated dance mum with a background in performance, the festival promises to be a celebration of talent, passion, and community.
Samantha, who danced herself as a young girl, has created the festival alongside her sister Kelly Henderson and niece Poppy, both of whom share her enthusiasm and history of dance. But at the heart of the event lies a deeply personal story—a tribute to Samantha and Kelly's late mother, Beryl Hooper, whose unwavering support for the dance community was a source of inspiration.
Beryl was a devoted dance mum, dance nanny, costume designer, and supporter whose influence spanned generations. She was not just an inspiration to her family but also to the wider dance world, always ready with a needle, thread, and a kind word of encouragement. Sadly, Beryl passed away from lung cancer in July 2024.
Despite her illness, Beryl played a pivotal role in the early planning of the festival. She visited the venue, provided insights, and even created meticulous to-do lists to ensure the event's success. Her excitement and dedication remain a driving force behind the festival’s mission to foster creativity and celebrate dancers of all ages and abilities.
“Her passion for dance and her love for the community were unmatched,” Samantha shared. “She would have absolutely loved seeing the dancers on stage and all the joy this festival will bring. This event is for her, as much as it is for every dancer stepping into the spotlight.”
The Dover Stage Festival will feature a range of categories, from ballet to modern and tap, offering opportunities for dancers to showcase their talents and grow as performers. The event will also host scholarships and awards, providing recognition and encouragement for the next generation of stars. We also have a very special performance from a local male voice choir to open the awards ceremony.
This festival not only serves as a platform for artistic expression but also as a reminder of the incredible legacy of one extraordinary dance mum. Samantha, Kelly, and Poppy are thrilled to bring this vision to life and to honor Beryl’s memory in such a meaningful way.
